Proseuche Devotions: Day 7

Proseuche Devotions
Daily Word
I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness
and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.–Psalm 17:17, NIV
Read Psalm 7 (NASB, NIV)
Listen to Psalm 7 (NASB, NIV)

Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. 17If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.”  –John 7:16-17
            Read John 7 (NASB, NIV)
Listen to John 7 (NASB, NIV)

Meditation

Prayer
Pray, then, in this way:
'Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. –Matthew 6:9-13

Find a moment of silence and reflect on the words,
            “And forgive us our debts.”

And forgive us our debts/our due/our sin.
Meditate on the many facets of these meanings.

Action
Does someone owe you something?  In your heart (and if possible directly to them) forgive someone a “debt” or sin.  Journal about this.

Proseuche Devotions: Day 6

Proseuche Devotions

Daily Word
My soul is in anguish.
How long, O LORD, how long?
Turn, O LORD, and deliver me;
save me because of your unfailing love. –Psalm 6:3-4, NIV
Read Psalm 6 (NASB, NIV)
Listen to Psalm 6 (NASB, NIV)

Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?"

Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. –John 6:8-13
Read John 6  (NASB, NIV)
Listen to John 6 (NASB, NIV)

Meditation

Find a moment of silence and reflect on the words,
“Give us this day our daily bread.”

In Greek it literally reads,
“The bread of ours necessary for today,
Give! (begging not demanding) to us today.”

The bread necessary for today’s survival,
is that what we are asking for?
What are your needs?  What are your wants?
Pray about and for them both, acknowledging the difference.

Action
Purposely “give” something to someone today.  This could be a necessity (water bottle or overdue word of encouragement) or an act of general kindness (a love note or pay for the toll of the car behind you).  Journal about your experience.

Amen. –Matthew 6:9-13

Find a moment of silence and reflect on these words:
“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

            God’s will.
            God’s will on earth.
God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

Action
Make a new recipe today.  One that sounds different and is on your plan.  Then thank the Lord for offering you the opportunity to try new (and maybe better) things.

Proseuche Devotions: Day 3

Proseuche Devotions
Daily Word
. . . you are a shield around me, O LORD;
you bestow glory on me and lift up my head.

To the LORD I cry aloud,
and he answers me from his holy hill.
–Psalm 3:3-4, NIV
            Read Psalm 3 (NASB, NIV)
Listen to Psalm 3 (NASB, NIV)

In reply Jesus declared,
“I tell you the truth,
no one can see the kingdom of God
unless he is born again.”

“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked.
“Surely he cannot enter a second time
into his mother's womb to be born!"

Jesus answered,
“I tell you the truth,
no one can enter the kingdom of God
unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh,
but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”
–John 2:3-5

Prayer
Pray, then, in this way:
'Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.  And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. –Matthew 6:9-13

Find a moment of silence and reflect on the words,
                  “hallowed be your name.”

The original Greek word for “hallowed” is agiazo, here meaning, “Make holy!”  The English word “hallow” means to “honor as holy.”
Something that is holy is set apart for use by God, sacred.
How can you “make” God’s name holy in your heart, mind, and mouth?

Action
Start a prayer journal for your fast.
Each time you write down a prayer,
put a date next to it and when it is answered,
                        also record that date.
Have you called your prayer partner?

The Proseuche Plan: Recipe Ideas

Thoughts
It seems that we have a variety of meal plans being pursued, and I think that is awesome.  God makes us unique, and we each have a path that is unique for us.  What I do see in common with them, is that we are trying to eliminate toxins.  I think that if we laid together all of our plans, side by side, we would find that they have one thing in common: eat fresh food.  Tonight, I am going to write down a few of my own recipes and low-sugar meal plan staples.

My hope is that we will all participant in the comments, as a community, sharing with one another.  In this way, God will use each of us for the blessing of others.  (P.S. - Remember to take a peek at past posts for newer comments)

A Few Low Sugar Snacks
  • Raw Almonds: The first thing I purchased for this journey were the Trader Joes Raw Almond snack packs.  If I am not around this store, I buy a large bag of raw almonds and put them in snack bags.  Then, I can grab one as I head out the door.
  • Pink Grapefruit: I know, they are tart, but when you are allowed no, or little sugar, they become the most wonderful treat.  My fridge is full of them right now, waiting for an afternoon snack.
  • Ants on a Log: I make a little twist on this old favorite, replacing peanut butter with almond butter and raisins with blueberries.  To make This fun and tasty treat, you will need celery, almond butter, and blueberries.  (Really, you just need celery, something creamy, and decor.)  Slice the celery stalk into three or four pieces, fill the center with your creamy filling, and add some fun on top!
  • Homemade Beef Jerky: For as little as $35 you can purchase a food dehydrator and make your own beef jerky.  Look online for recipes (or share them below) and have some dhydrating fun!
  • Greek Salad: It only takes a few minutes to chop up some tomatoes, celery, onion, and feta, finishing with olive oil and vinegar.  And wow, is this is a nice snack.
  • Sandwich Meat Roll:  Right now I have some "everything free" sandwich meat in the fridge waiting to be rolled up with a slice of cheese, a pickle, or tomato.  This could also turn into lunch.
  • And what would you recommend?

The Proseuche Plan: Tips

On to Victory!
DO’s

Do consult a physician before you start any meal plan.  Women with eating disorders should speak to a counselor and doctor before starting this type or any type of plan.
Do eat Breakfast, Morning Snack, Lunch, Afternoon Snack, and Dinner.
Do drink lots of water (preferably distilled)!  In fact drink it all day long.
Do try to eat eggs for breakfast.
Do exercise.  Start with walking if you need to.
Do weigh yourself ONCE at the beginning, measurements would be good too, even a photo.
You may follow up on this if you want after the six weeks, and at the end of your plan.
Do read your Bible daily.  Prayer and Bible reading are crucial to your success.  A good plan is
to read a Psalm a day, along with a chapter a day starting with the book of John, and then
Acts, and then Ephesians.
Do Have A Prayer Partner.  You need to pray daily with your prayer partner for the
strength to stick with your plan and to pray with about your concerns.  This is an important aspect of the Proseuche Plan.  Doing this will determine how successfully you will finish.

DONT'S

Avoid drinking while you eat, it dilutes your stomach acid.
Avoid using artificial sweeteners. If you have to use something, try some Stevia.
Don’t give up if you “blow” it.  Just start over at the next meal.  It’s not that big of a deal.
Don’t weigh yourself during your six weeks.  Let the number go.  Set it free!  This six weeks is
about you and God getting down to business, not about losing a pound a day.  You will feel the difference in your body and clothes, things you do not need a scale for.
Don’t give up!  Persevere!

The Proseuche Plan: What is Best For You?

So here is the "thing": the Proseuche Plan is not about any particular way to eat, per se, but it is a spiritual journey.  Yesterday we talked about how the Greek word for prayer is "proseuche," giving us our theme word.  This "Prayer Plan" is meant to help you focus on God through a fast.  Some fasts require giving up all food, but others allow you to eat certain foods.  Daniel gave up meat and Ezekiel ate only a grain mixture.  In our world, meat is not a luxury item, as it was then.  They gave up "rich" foods to eat healthy basic foods.  This fast is about giving up our luxurious toxins to focus on eating healthy foods.  For instance, diet soda, chocolate covered protein bars, and whole grain bread might be included in the “diet” sections of some stores; however, the caffeine, sugar, and preservatives are all still present.
Today, I am going to present a meal plan that I created after trying many different diets.  I have done Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, the Blood Type Diet, Somersizing, the Maker’s Diet, the South Beach Diet, the Rainbow Diet, the Lemonade Diet, and some weird powder I spent too much money for.  Not to mention starving myself, over-eating, and purging, which was addictive and counter-productive.  So you can say, that just like you, I have “tried it all,” or at least, “I tried a lot.”  My plan comes from a mixture of the plans that worked best for me.  And here is the important part . . . this is the plan that worked best for me.  While the Blood Type Diet did nothing for me, it was great for a few friends of mine who rave about it.  The Lemonade Diet had me in bed unable to move by the end of the day, but again another three friends who love it. Calorie counting plans triggered my eating disorder when I was young, though they work great for my mother.  For me, the only way to feel great (and look great) was by creating a combination of the Maker’s Diet, South Beach Diet, and to some extent, Somersizing.  So here is my big point:  my plan might work great for you too, but in the Proseuche Plan, it’s not so much about which plan you pick, as it is that you choose a healthy plan and stick to it.  The idea is to free ourselves from toxins and unhealthy substances, offering this time of purification up to God as a fast.
As a Christian speaker, I often have events to plan for.  When I have an event coming up in six to nine months, I will often give up chocolate as a fast.  Recently I had an event in three months and I gave up chocolate and all foods containing yeast.  Right now, I have some big things happening in my life and I feel the need to draw closer to God for direction, so I will do my six-week plan.  The great thing about this plan, is that in the past I was able to maintain it for several years afterwards.  So it was not just a fad, but a healthy lifestyle.  My prayer for you is that you would choose a meal plan that is not only healthy for you over the next six weeks, but also over a lifetime.
What will you choose to do for your Proseuche Plan?

The Proseuche Plan

“Diet” is four letter wordWho wants to be on one of those?  And when we try—and we do try—we have results in the beginning and lapse back into our old ways at the end.  It becomes a destructive cycle that wears on our bodies and our spirits.  But what if our eating and our praying could be united in one effort, for a spiritual and physical blessing?
This meal plan is meant to be a spiritual journey.  While I am not a doctor, I am a woman who has been healed from an eating disorder and who later in life found herself muddling through "every-day girl" food issues.  Spending the last thirteen years in Christian ministry, I have experimented with both my food and my prayer life.  What I am presenting here is my own plan for spiritual and physical wellness.
The food selected in this plan comes out of my own research and experience, combining aspects of the Makers Diet by Jordan Reuban and the South Beach Diet.  In other words, it is a no-sugar, high protein plan.  The difference with the Proseuche Plan, is not in what you eat, but how you go about it.  The word “proseuche” (pronounced pros-ew-khay) is the Biblical Greek word for “prayer.”  This is a “Prayer” plan.
All of us have something that is weighing heavy on our hearts.  Things from the past, daily struggles, or concerns for the future.  What are you concerned about right now?  If you don’t know, ask someone close to you, I am sure they hear you mention your concern over and over again.  Could it be your relationships, money, work, health?  Whatever your chief concern is, this should become the focus of your Proseuche Plan.
Following the Proseuche Plan turns a diet into a fast.  In the Bible, a fast is when you give up some or all food for the purpose of bringing your concerns before God.  When you give up sugar, caffeine, grains, and many carbohydrates, you will participate in the suffering of self-denial.  (This is another experience in a biblical fast.)  You will probably go through withdrawals from the sugar and caffeine.  In my own experience, these withdrawals could be minimal, like a little headache or irritability, or they could take the form of a migraine or flu like symptoms.  Fortunately, I found that after a few days the withdrawal symptoms pass.  After a week or so my sugar cravings also pass.  Soon, I find that I start to enjoy my new freedom from toxic foods.  Many people express that their bowel movement become regular, acne clears, and yeast symptoms subsist.
You see, a secondary benefit of the Proseuche Plan is that your body will become more healthy and you will feel better about yourself.
In my experience, I found that the first two weeks are the most difficult, physically and spiritually.  If you participate (you should consult your doctor first), it is at this time you need to place a special focus on prayer.  In general, pray for yourself, your concerns, and those around you.  In particular, pray for your special concern.  Every time you go to eat (or not eat) lift your concern up to God in prayer.  For example, when I would really like a piece of chocolate I might pray, “God, I lift up _____.  Please intervene,” or “Lord, help me to ____.”   Then I say no to the chocolate.
The Proseuche Plan is all about motivation.  We are not "dieting" to lose weight (though you will lose weight), we are doing this to draw closer to God and present our special prayer request before Him.
Once you start the Proseuche Plan, don’t be surprised if things “shake-up” a little bit in your life.  While we often point the finger at others in our prayers, “God fix my husband,” we may be unaware that God needs to work in us first.  In other words, sometimes God needs to readjust our lives to answer our prayers.
The key to the Proseuche Plan is that we have to continually go before God and allow Him to work in us.  Each food choice provides us with the opportunity to lift up our concerns, again and again.  This plan provides us with the opportunity to trust God, believing that He hears our prayers and will answer them.  (Now, sometimes this answer is in a way we asked for and sometimes not.)  The Proseuche Plan will help us to focus on God’s will for our lives, which comes from the very essence of love Himself.
I pray that through the Proseuche Plan you will discover that you can entrust your life to the One who loves you most.
